We support all employees in attaining their professional engineering licenses and all certifications relevant to their discipline, including LEED, Green Globes, Commissioning tests, etc. We pay for the costs of the exams and will pay for the time spent while taking the exams. Employees often conduct in-house group study sessions to help each other succeed.
It is essential to our company’s success that our employees are highly trained and educated. Engineers and designers must be up-to-date on codes and standards to successfully design projects. Therefore our firm is an advocate of continuing education, both in-house and out. Some employees pursue their bachelor’s or master’s degrees; others continuously study to receive certifications and obtain necessary CEU’s. We provide educational lunch programs and send employees to conferences, seminars, and workshops as necessary. We are committed to proactive engineering and offer project management training to selected engineers/designers. Since our philosophy is to treat clients as team members, good communication skills are imperative.
We encourage participation in professional organizations related to an employee’s career. We may pay an employee’s membership dues in one professional association. Employees are encouraged to serve on a committee or board and are allotted paid time for this each month. In addition, our employees are a representation of the firm when at these functions. We work with individuals to assist with networking basics if needed in order to make the most of their experience while participating.
In order to attract and retain a highly qualified and competent workforce, we have instituted a performance management program to compensate employees in a fair and equitable manner based upon demonstrated job performance, and in accordance with its Equal Employment Opportunity policy. A new employee will go through a training period to educate him or her about the standards, methods, and procedures that have been developed at Matern. Employees receive constructive work reviews designed to address performance and skill developmental needs and interests. Based on the profitability of the firm, we offer bonuses, profit sharing, and a 401K match on an annual basis to eligible employees.
Generally, employees must be in their job for at least one year before applying for a change in position. In addition, employees must have a good performance, attendance, and punctuality record. We prefer to promote from within and encourage all our employees to seek additional coursework to further their careers within the organization.
MPE has established a variety of employee benefit programs designed to assist their employees and their eligible dependents in meeting the financial burdens that can result from illness and disability and to help them plan for retirement. Employees are eligible to enroll in any of the following plans on the first of the next month after 1 month from hire. All the following information is condensed and additional information will be supplied when eligible for enrollment.
- Medical Insurance: employees can choose between an HMO, POS, or Hi-Deductible Plan/HSA. MPE pays 90% of the employee’s cost and 40% of the dependent’s cost
- Dental Insurance: offered through a nationally recognized company; MPE pays 90% of the employee’s cost
- Vision Insurance: MPE pays 50% of the employee’s cost
- GAP Medical Insurance: This pays for part of the deductible expenses and other costs like an ER visit, MRI and diagnostics scans, Urgent Care co-pays, etc. MPE pays 100% of the employee’s cost.
- Short Term Disability: MPE pays 21% of the cost ensuring that the cost is affordable
- Long Term Disability: available on a voluntary basis
- Flexible Spending Account: allows employees to enjoy tax-free medical purchases
- Dependent Care Account: allows employees to pay child care expenses before taxes
- Health Savings Account (HSA ): open an HSA if you choose a Hi-deductible medical plan and enjoy tax-free savings for future medical expenses
- 125 Cafeteria Plan/ Premium Only Plan: Many of the above insurance programs can be covered under this plan making deductions tax free to the employee
- Life Insurance: All employees are covered under a group term plan with various limits and employees have the option to purchase additional coverage for themselves, their spouses, & their children
Matern strives to offer employees the proper equipment/computers that allow them to work in the most efficient manner. A dedicated CAD manager works full-time on updating Matern’s CAD standards and routines. Staff currently use AutoCAD, along with Autodesk Building Systems and Revit. Computers are upgraded as needed to allow these programs to be used effectively. Employees are supplied work stations and supplies to keep distractions at a minimum. An in-house Network Administrator monitors and updates computers, servers, as needed and monitors connections between offices to eliminate “downtime”.
