Charlotte County Government
Project Description:
Matern provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for a 128-bed infirmary to the Charlotte County Jail. The 24,000 SF, 3-story addition included an inmate clinic with exam rooms, pharmacy, laboratory, EKG area, negative pressure isolation rooms, direct observation cells, mental health area, a dental area with exam stations, offices, records area, and storage. The project also includes an expansion to the central energy plant to accommodate the new wing and all related site work.
The expansion is intended to give better healthcare to inmates and lower costs by reducing the need for outsourcing health care to local hospitals and was funded by the county’s one percent local option sales tax. It includes innovative design due to limited space and site requirements.
The project costs approximately $10 million to design and construct and was completed in June 2018. Matern was hired by Strollo Architects to assist in the design of this project, and Wharton-Smith constructed it.
