At Matern, green design is not just a rating system to be achieved. Yes, LEED / GGBS / Energy Star and the like were created to lessen environmental impact. However, we have been designing for energy efficiency long before these entities existed because our clients deserved it. We design for energy efficiency to not only save energy consumption but to save money. We provide comparative system studies for the majority of our projects; looking at long-term and first cost savings.
The improvement of building energy performance reduces costs and lowers the strain on resources. As a bi-product, a commitment to environmental stewardship is demonstrated. Through our experience, we have developed core considerations we look to incorporate when designing building systems. These include:
Our sustainability efforts include using LEED, Green Globes, and Energy Star initiatives to drive design, creating optimized systems that save on energy, and utilizing comparative system studies to provide cost-effective savings.
We have completed 22 LEED projects including the Orlando International Airport South Terminal Complex; which is LEED v4. On March 26, 2018, USGBC released the LEED v4.1 O&M Beta. This is an incremental change that is being implemented to make the process streamlined to obtain “Green Buildings For All”. We are excited about the new v4.1 for “Existing Buildings” as 90 of the 100 points required for certification are “based on the building's impact” and on “measured performance”.
We have numerous projects for local school districts and colleges that follow Green Globe policies but do not seek certification. The Volusia County Consolidated Dispatch and EOC acquired a 3 Globe certification as well as a LEED Silver certification. We have the knowledge to utilize these guidelines and seek this certification if so desired.
We are frequently asked to do energy star operation and maintenance reports for clients. These reports help capture any energy efficiencies that may exist in the facility. Through the Energy Star Energy Management program, we help them develop an energy management program focused on continuous improvement of the energy consumption at the facility. Striving for an Energy Star label can save on average 40% on energy usage without compromising comfort and quality.
Energy Audits are used for a variety of purposes such as energy rebates, tax incentives, and cutting down on electric bills. Of course, the primary goal is to save money so most of our clients want a complete facility energy audit identifying the energy consumption from highest to lowest along with energy conservation measures that can be incorporated to save. These are identified in priority order and we work with the client to design the correction of the problem.
